Bei der neuesten Ausgabe unseres Interviewformats lässt uns der Mastermind des deutschen Symphonic Black Metal Projekts 3XPERIMENTAL in seine Gedanken blicken – die positiver und hoffnungsvoller scheinen, als man es von Black Metallern gewohnt ist. Aber zumindestens in Videos würde ein bisschen Misanthropie durchscheinen. Wir sind uns fast sicher, dass ihr nach dem Interview Lust auf die neue Platte bekommen könntet.
1. Wie habt ihr Bandname und Logo entwickelt?
Der Name „3xperimental“ spiegelt wortwörtlich die experimentelle Seite unserer Musik. Obwohl unser Stil eindeutig Metal ist und deshalb recht düster, experimentiere ich gerne mit verschiedenen Klängen, Kompositionsstilen oder musikalischen Themen, die man eher in anderen Genres findet. Der zentrale Part des Songs „Water“ von unserem neuen Album ist beispielsweise um die Aufnahme eines Buckelwals herum aufgebaut, die über eine Gitarren-Amp abgespielt wurde.
2. Was muss ein Song haben, damit er auf eurer CD landet? Welche Songs fliegen raus?
Ich liebe es, Alben auf einem Konzept aufzubauen. Nicht unbedingt eine komplette Geschichte, aber ein gemeinsames Thema. Die Songs werden also so geschrieben, dass sie zu diesem Thema passen.
3. Was darf bei einem Live-Auftritt nie fehlen?
Wir spielen im Moment keine Live-Shows, aber wenn es wieder möglich ist, würde ich gerne Ambient Video FX überall um uns herum projizieren, um das musikalische Konzept bzw. die Geschichte unserer Alben zu unterstützen.
4. Welches Ziel verfolgt ihr mit eurer Musik?
Ich höre ständig Musik in meinem Kopf und möchte sie dann mit den Leuten teilen. Musik hilft mir jeden Tag und vielleicht kann meine Musik auch anderen helfen.
5. Wie seht ihr euren Platz in der Szene?
Es ist unser zweites Album, wir sind also noch relativ neu und recht Underground im Moment, auch wenn ich schon seit mindestens 15 Jahren Musik schreibe. Die Reaktionen auf „Symphony of Elements“ waren bisher super und ich hoffe, wir können unseren Radius in der Zukunft noch weiter ausdehnen.
6. Was nervt euch am Musik-Business am meisten?
Zwei Dinge:
1. Es ist ziemlich schwierig, heutzutage Aufmerksamkeit auf sich zu ziehen. Man kann nicht einfach ein Demo an ein Musiklabel schicken… Tun wir natürlich, und wir hatten viel PR für dieses Album, aber es wird so viel Musik jeden Tag veröffentlicht…
2. Streaming Platforms. Ich verstehe schon, dass es praktisch ist. Aber viele Leute hören sich keine ganzen Alben mehr an, sondern nur einzelne Songs außerhalb des Zusammenhangs. Das nervt, wenn man Konzeptalben schreibt…
7. Wer sind eure Vorbilder?
In keiner besonderen Reihenfolge: Nightwish (Century Child), Evergrey, Dimmu Borgir (Enthrone Darkness Triumphant), Dark Tranquillity, Katatonia, The Project Hate MCMXCIX
8. Wie entstehen eure Texte?
Ich entscheide mich zuerst für das Thema eines Songs und dann entstehen die Lyrics recht einfach daraus.
9. Wenn alles möglich wäre – wie würde euer ultimatives Musikvideo aussehen?
Irgendetwas sehr atmosphärisches, viel Naturbilder, keine Menschen.
10. Welche Band(s) haltet ihr gerade für völlig unter-/überbewertet? Warum?
Überbewertet? Pop Musik…
Unterbewertet? The Project Hate! Im Ernst, hört euch das an, der Typ ist auf einem ganz anderen Niveau, so kreativ und der beste Bass Sound überhaupt.
11. Wie sieht euer Proberaum aus?
Da gibt es nichts besonderes, ein Haufen Kabel, die überall herumliegen, und vielleicht bräuchte es mal ein bisschen Saubermachen.
12. Wann habt ihr die meisten/besten Ideen für neue Songs?
Das kann zu jeder Tageszeit passieren, manchmal völlig aus dem Nichts, manchmal beim Jammen.
13. Was ist der Stoff, aus dem eure Alpträume sind?
Die Welt ist im Moment richtigsch schlecht, weswegen ich die Alpträume und die Dunkelheit in meine Musik übertrage und ich mehr auf Dinge konzentriere, die Hoffnung machen.

In our latest issue of our interview series, we get an insight into the thoughts of the mastermind of the German Symphonic Black Metal project 3XPERIMENTAL, and they are more positive and more hopeful than one might be used to from black metalheads. But at least his videos would display some misantrophy. We are quite sure that after the interview you definitely want to listen to the new album.
1. How did you develop your band name and logo?
The name „3xperimental“ reflects literally the experimental side of our music. Although the style is clearly metal, and quite dark, I experiment with sounds, composing styles, or phrase structures that are more likely found in other genres. For instance the central section of the track „Water“ in our new album is built around a recording of a humpback whale, played through a guitar amp.
2. What makes a song suitable for your album? Which songs will not make it onto your album?
I like to build albums around a concept. Not necessarily a full story but at least a common theme. Songs are designed to fit that theme.
3. What is a must-have for your live shows?
We currently don’t do live shows, but when possible I’d like to be able to beam ambient video FX all around us to support the musical concept/story of our albums.
4. Do you pursue an objective with your music?
I always hear music in my head and I want to share it with people. Music brings me a lot of support every day, and maybe mine can help other people too.
5. Where do you see yourselves within the metal scene?
It’s our second album, so we are relatively new and underground at the moment, although I have been composing for at least 15 years. The feedback on „Symphony of Elements“ has been awesome so far and I hope we will push our limits even more in the future.
6. What annoys you the most about the music business?
Two things:
– it’s pretty hard to get noticed nowadays. You can’t just send a demo to a label… We do of course, and had a great PR for this album, but there is so much music being released every day….
– Streaming platforms. I get it, it’s convenient… but many people don’t listen to albums anymore, just individual songs out of context. It sucks when you write concept albums…
7. Who are your idols?
In no specific order: Nightwish (Century Child), Evergrey, Dimmu Borgir (Enthrone Darkness Triumphant), Dark Tranquillity, Katatonia, The Project Hate MCMXCIX
8. How do you develop your lyrics?
I decide first the theme of the song, and then lyrics come naturally somehow.
9. If anything was possible – what would your ultimate music video look like?
Something very atmospheric, lots of Nature shots, no humans.
10. Which band(s) do you deem to be over-/underrated at the moment? Why?
Overrated ? Pop music…
Underrated ? The Project Hate ! Seriously, listen to this, this guy is on a whole other level, so much creativity and the best bass guitar sound ever.
11. What does your rehearsal room look like?
Nothing special, lots of cables running around, though, and perhaps it needs some cleaning 😉
12. When do you have the most/best ideas for new songs?
Could be any time of the day, sometimes out of the blue, sometimes when jamming.
13. What are your nightmares made of?
The world is pretty bad right now so I put the nightmares and darkness in my music, and focus on more hopeful things.
