Hi Julia! Mir geht es gut, danke! Eine Albumveröffentlichung ist immer aufregend, gerade weil wir nicht auf Tour gehen können in diesen verrückten Zeiten. Deswegen bin ich sehr aufgeregt und kann es kaum abwarten zu sehen, wie die Fans das Album für sich entdecken!
In der Albumbeschreibung steht, dass es ‚die Band von einer neuen Seite’ zeigen wird. Kannst uns mehr über diese neue Seite erzählen? Gibt es ein Konzept oder ein wiederkehrendes Thema in den Songs?
Das neue Album geht künstlerisch in eine neue Richtung, ein modernerer und frischer Ansatz für SIRENIA. Es gibt ein paar Klangexperimente mit elektronischen Elementen. Es ist auch ein sehr vielseitiges Album, jeder Song hat seine eigene Atmosphäre. Obwohl dieses Album eine neue Seite der Band zeigt, verliert es nie die Essenz von SIRENIA.
Eure erste Single „Addiction No 1” hat eher gemischte Rückmeldungen von Fans erhalten, während sie „We Come to Ruins“ mehr mochten. Was denkst du über deren Kritik? Wie hat der Rest der Band reagiert?
„We Come to Ruins” ist ein harter Song, welcher viel von dem, was SIRENIA ausmacht, kombiniert. „Addiction No 1“ hat einen völlig anderen Ansatz, und wie ich schon vorher sagte, hat jeder Song seine eigene Atmosphäre. Dieser ist eingängiger, vielleicht ein kommerzielleres Vorgehen als bei den anderen und diese künstlerische Ausrichtung hat viele Fans beunruhigt.
Meistens wollen die Leute, dass die Band genau das macht, was man von ihnen erwartet, und wenn sie anders klingen, fängt ihre Welt an einzustürzen. Sie fühlen sich betrogen. Ich sage das ohne jegliches Urteil, es ist bloß eine Aussage und ich denke, dass alle Band in der Musikgeschichte, sogar die Größten, das schon erlebt haben.
Wir alle akzeptieren Kritik als Teil des Spiels, wir nehmen sie mit viel ‚Distanz‘ und Einsicht auf. Das wird uns weder entmutigen noch die Hoffnung verlieren lassen. Manchmal geht es einfach um Zeit. Die Leute brauchen Zeit, um etwas Neues, Anderes schätzen zu lernen.
Wenn man das im Hinterkopf behält, wäre es meiner Meinung nach falsch, wenn eine Band ihre Musik so ausrichtet, dass das Publikum um jeden Preis zufriedengestellt ist. Ich meine, dass es sehr wichtig ist, zu seinen Überzeugungen zu stehen und die Wege, die man in der Musik beschreitet, zu verfolgen. Aber die Leute begrüßen es auch, da es einen wachsen lässt.
SIRENIA hat verschiedene Sängerinnen über die Jahre gehabt und einige Fans wünschen sich immer noch die eine oder andere zurück. Wie gehst du damit um?
Ich schenke dem überhaupt keine Beachtung. Es wird immer Hater und Leute, die sich beschweren, geben, egal wer gerade die Sängerin ist. Leute mit mehr Reife verstehen, dass wenn solch ein Besetzungswechsel stattfindet, es triftige Gründe gibt. Ein Sängerinwechsel ist oft kein schöner Moment, es ist nie einfach und eine schwere Entscheidung, die immer Konsequenzen für die Band hat. Es ist also immer eine durchdachte Entscheidung, nie eine Laune im Fall von SIRENIA.
Eine Sängerin zu sein, die eine andere ersetzt, ist sicherlich nicht einfach. Man muss sich 20 mal mehr beweisen, als wenn man die Originalbesetzung ist. Viele Leute mit schlechten Absichten warten darauf, dass du Fehler machst. Aber ich versuche nicht alle um jeden Preis zufriedenzustellen. Jedem steht es frei mich zu mögen oder nicht – wenn ich ehrlich bin, ist es mir egal. Ich mache meinen Job einfach mit Herzblut und jedem steht es frei, an Bord zu kommen oder am Ufer zu bleiben. 🙂
Fans der 80er werden feststellen, dass der letzte Song auf dem neuen Album, ein Cover von „Voyage Voyage” von Desireless (FR) ist. Warum habt ihr beschlossen, diesen Song zu covern? Bist du auch ein Fan von Musik aus diesem Jahrzehnt?
Ja, ich liebe den Sound der 80er, aber ich bin nicht diejenige, die die Idee hatte! Vielleicht ist es überraschend, aber die Entscheidung Desireless zu covern kam nicht aus der französischen Fraktion (Nils und ich) der Band, sondern von Morten, der diesen Song liebt. Diesen Song haben wir oft im Tourbus gehört. Als Morten mit der Idee zu uns kam, muss ich gestehen, dass ich ein wenig erstaunt war, da ich mir kaum vorstellen konnte, wie eine Metalversion des Songs klingen würde. Aber als er die Musikdateien geschickt hat, fand ich es großartig!
Es sind schwierige Zeiten und SIRENIA musste den Aufnahmeprozess auch anpassen. Wie hat die Pandemie die Gestaltung von Riddles, Ruins & Revelations beeinflusst?
Während der ganzen Zeit wurden wir mit unerwarteten Situationen konfrontiert. Wir mussten nach vorne schauen, jedes Mal Lösungen finden, wenn ein Plan nicht umgesetzt werden konnte. Wir mussten lernen uns anzupassen und in vielen Punkten flexibel sein, Termine verschieben, anders denken, manchmal sogar Pläne in der letzten Minute ändern. Aber wir haben viel Arbeit hineingesteckt, um alles möglich zu machen. Diese besondere Situation hat dem Album eine besondere Note verliehen.
Wie kommst du generell mit dieser Situation zurecht?
Es ist manchmal schwer, aber man muss optimistisch bleiben und nach vorne schauen. Gezwungen zu sein, seit über einem Jahr Konzerte und Touren abzusagen, ist herzzerreißend, manchmal deprimierend. Über eine so lange Zeit seiner Arbeit, des Zusammenseins, eines normalen, sozialen Leben beraubt zu sein, ist wirklich hart. Aber es ist sehr wichtig, weiterhin an Projekten zu arbeiten und Touren zu planen, auch wenn niemand weiß, was in den kommenden Monaten sein wird. Wir müssen einfach dran glauben.
Glaubst du, dass dies eine Gelegenheit ist, das Musik-/Eventbusiness umzustrukturieren und zu verbessern oder wird alles wie gewohnt weitergehen, wenn die Pandemie vorbei ist?
Natürlich müssen wir uns anpassen, Lösungen finden, damit die Musik diesen Sturm überlebt. Und vielleicht ist es eine Gelegenheit, um neu zu strukturieren und das Musik-/Eventbusiness zu verbessern. Es wird Zeit brauchen, neue Ideen und neue Wege zu entwickeln. Die Dinge werden nach Covid nie mehr so sein wie früher. Wir müssen unsere Welt umgestalten.
Ich bin sicher, ihr habt bereits an eine neue Tour gedacht, um Riddles, Ruins & Revelations zu feiern. Gab es überhaupt schon irgendwelche Pläne oder wartet ihr, bis es genauere Infos gibt?
Wir arbeiten natürlich daran. Niemand weiß, wie sich die Situation in den nächsten Monaten entwickeln wird, aber wir machen weiter, planen Touren und machen Pläne und hoffen das Beste. Und wir werden sehen. Wir wollen optimistisch bleiben. Wir können es kaum erwarten, auf die Bühne zurückzukehren, besonders da wir unser neues Album präsentieren und die Songs live spielen wollen!
Welche Songs von SIRENIA singst du live am liebsten?
Schwer da eine Entscheidung zu treffen…! Ich liebe es, „The Other Side” und „The Path to Decay” von den älteren Alben zu performen. Von Dim Day of Dolor „The Goddess of the Sea” und „Ashes to Ashes”, und von Arcane Astral Aeons „Asphyxia” und „The Twilight Hour”. Ich kann es kaum erwarten, „This Curse of Mine” und „We Come to Ruins” von Riddles, Ruins & Revelations zu spielen.
Und die letzte Frage: Welche Fragen beantwortest in Interviews nicht gern?

Hi Emma, thank you for answering a few questions. I hope you’re doing well. Riddles, Ruins & Revelations will soon be released, how excited are you?
Hi Julia! I’m doing good thanks! A new album release is always an exciting moment, especially in these crazy times we are deprived of touring! So I feel really excited and can’t wait for the fans discover it!
The description of your new album says that it will show ‘the band from a new side’. Can you tell us more about this new side? Is there any concept or recurrent theme behind the songs?
This new album is taking a new direction artistically, a more modern and fresh approach of SIRENIA. There are some new sound experiments with the using of electronic elements. It’s also a very versatile album, every song having its own atmosphere. While this album shows a new side of the band it never loses SIRENIA’s essence.
Your first single “Addiction No 1” has received quite mixed reviews by fans, whereas they like the second single “We Come To Ruins” more. What do you think about the criticism? How did the rest of the band react to that?
“We come to ruins” is a heavy song combining what a lot of people are used to with Sirenia sound across the years. “Addiction N°1” is a totally different approach, and as I said previously all the songs of the album have different atmospheres. This one is a catchier, maybe a more commercial approach of a song than the other ones and this artistic bias disturbed a lot of fans.
Most of the time, people like to hear a band doing exactly what they are expecting from it, and if it sounds different their world looks to crumble around, they feel kind of betrayed; I say that without any judgement, it’s only a statement and I think all the bands in music history, even the greatest ones, have experienced that.
All of us totally accept criticism as a part of the game, we take it with a lot of “distance” and discernment and it will never discouraged us or make us lose faith in any way.
Sometimes it’s all about time. People just need time to learn to appreciate something new and different.Knowing that, it would be a mistake from a band in my opinion to direct its music choices in a way to please the audience at all costs, I mean it’s very important to stay faithfull with your convictions and to the paths you want to follow in music, however people welcome it because taking risks makes you grow.
SIRENIA has had different vocalists over the years and some fans still want some of them back. How do you deal with that?
I absolutely don’t pay attention to that. There will always be haters and people complaining whoever the singer is. People with more maturity are able to understand that when a such a changing happens in a band, there is serious reasons to that. A singer changing is rarely a happy moment, it’s never easy, it is a hard decision to take that always have huge consequences on several points for a band, so it’s always a reasoned decision, never a whim in SIRENIA’s case. Being a singer replacing another singer is not easy for sure. You have to prove yourself 20 times more than if you were the first and only one singer of a band. Lots of bad intentioned people are waiting for your fall. But I don’t try to please anyone at all costs, anyone is free to love me or not, to be honest I don’t really care. I just do my job with all my heart and soul and anyone is free to come on board or stay on the shore. 🙂
Fans of 80s music will notice that the last song of the new album is a cover of “Voyage Voyage” by Desireless (FR). Why did you decide to cover this song? Are you a fan of music from that decade?
Yes I love the sound of music from the 80’s, but I’m not the one from who the idea came! Maybe it sounds surprising but the decision to cover Desireless “Voyage Voyage” didn’t come from the French division of the band (Nils and me,) but from Morten who loves this song so much. That’s a song we often listen to while touring in the tourbus. When Morten came up with the idea of covering the song, I have to admit that was a bit puzzled, because I could hardly imagine how could sound a metal version of it. But when he sent the files I had to admit it was brilliant!
These are strange times now and SIRENIA had to adjust the album making process as well. How did the pandemic influence the creation of Riddles, Ruins & Revelations?
All along the album making process we had to face unexpected situations, we had to move forward, to find solutions urgently every time a plan was not possible anymore, we had to learn to adapt very fast and be flexible on many points, to reschedule, to think differently, to change our plans sometimes at the last minute. But we put a lot of involvement to make it possible, and this particular situation gave a special taste to this album.
How do you cope with this situation in general?
It’s hard sometimes but it’s important to stay optimistic in the future and to move forward. Having to cancel shows and tours for more than a year, have been heart breaking, depressing sometimes. Being deprived of work, of being together, of having a social normal life on such a long period is really hard. But it’s very important to continue to make projects, to plan tours even if nobody knows how it will turn out in the next months. We absolutely have to do and think as if it will happen.
Do you think that this can be an opportunity to restructure and improve the music/event business or will everything go back to ‘business as usual’ when the pandemic is over?
Of course we have to adapt, to find solutions to make music survive to this storm, and maybe it’s the opportunity to restructure and improve the music events and business. It will take time to find solutions, for new ideas and new way of thinking to emerge. Things won’t never be the same after Covid, for anybody. We have to reshape our world.
I’m sure you were already thinking about another tour to celebrate Riddles, Ruins & Revelations. Has there been any planning at all or will you wait for more reliable info?
We’re working on it of course. Nobody knows how the situation will evolve in the next months, but we go forward, planning tours, making plans, as if it will happen. And we’ll see. We want to stay optimistic in the future. We can’t wait to be back on stage, especially to present our brand new album and perform new songs live!
Which songs by SIRENIA are your favourites to sing on stage?
Hard to make a choice….! I love to perform “The Other Side” and “The Path to Decay” as older songs, “The Goddess of the Sea” and “Ashes to Ashes” from Dim Days of Dolor and “Asphyxia” and “The Twilight Hour” from Arcane Astral Aeons. Can’t wait to perform live new songs from Riddles, Ruins & Revelations like “This Curse of Mine” and “We Come to Ruins”.
