FRAGMENT SOUL – Spiros Georgiou über das Debütalbum und Zukunftspläne (Interview)

FRAGMENT SOUL bereiten sich darauf vor Anfang Mai ihr Debütalbum zu veröffentlichen. Griechenland hat schon bereits einige hochkarätige Metalbands hervorgebracht und es scheint, als würden sich FRAGMENT SOUL nahtlos in diese Reihe einfügen. Da wir das Projekt ein wenig näher kennenlernen und mehr über das kommende Werk erfahren wollten, haben wir Gründer Spiros Georgiou darum gebeten, ein paar Fragen zu beantworten.

Hi Spiros! Danke, dass du ein paar Fragen beantwortest! Axiom of Choice wird bald veröffentlicht. Wie sehr bist du aufgeregt?

Zunächst einmal würde ich dir gerne für das Interview danken.

Um ehrlich zu sein bin ich sehr froh, dass wir das Album endlich veröffentlichen. Es war ein langer Weg dorthin, der 2006 angefangen hat. Damals habe ich das Konzept für das Album erarbeitet. Ich kann gar nicht dankbar genug sein, dass mein Bruder Jimmy Louvros mit in der Band ist, da er das Meiste zu den finalen Instrumentalparts beigetragen hat.

Was hat dich inspiriert, dieses Album zu machen?

Im Grunde die unveröffentlichten Sachen, an denen Jimmy und ich seit einigen Jahren gearbeitet haben. Nachdem ich die Uni beendet hatte (ich hab eine Weile keine Musik komponiert), kam der Drang meine Ideen und die Jimmys zu sammeln von ganz allein. Also komponierten wir zusammen ein Album.

Warum fühlst du dich zu diesem Musikgenre hingezogen?

Seitdem ich ein Kind war, hörte ich vor allem Prog Bands, wie Opeth, Katatonia, Rush, King Crimson, Pink Floyd und viele andere. Vor allem Bands aus den 70ern. Dann hab ich angefangen, mich für das Doom Death/Goth Metal Genre zu interessieren. Ich hörte Bands wie Daylight Dies, Draconian und Swallow the Sun. Ich war sofort davon angetan, da ich diese horrorähnliche Atmosphäre liebe. Deswegen wird man wohl all diese genres auf dem Album wiederfinden.

Du hast zwei Personen zur Zusammenarbeit eingeladen. Warum gerade diese beiden?

Ich würde mich gerne bei beiden bedanken. Heike Langhans und Egan O’Rourke haben mit viel Enthusiasmus für die Musik zugesagt. Da das Album ein Konzeptalbum ist, verspürte ich den Bedarf nach einer weiblichen und männlichen Stimme, um den Ansprüchen eines der Songs gerecht zu werden.

Egan zu fragen war eine klare Entscheidung, da Daylight Dies eine meiner Lieblingsbands ist, Punkt. Egan hat so ein großartiges Gesangstalent, dass seine Stimme sofort passte.

Was Heike angeht, ist das eine andere Geschichte. 2016 kannte ich sie nicht, um ehrlich zu sein. Dann habe ich einen Song von Hallatar gefunden, auf dem sie zu hören ist, und dann hab ich realisiert, dass sie die Sängerin bei Draconian ist! Als ich also den Song hörte, sagte ich mir: „Ok, dieser Gesang würde perfekt zum Album passen“.

Axiom of Choice ist ein Konzeptalbum, das sich mit verschiedenen Situationen und Emotionen auseinandersetzt. Kannst du ein wenig mehr über die Hauptcharaktere des Albums erzählen?

Es ist eine Reise durch Liebe, Angst, Qual und am Ende eine unerwartete Ruhe, die die Hauptcharaktere gleichsam in den Wahnsinn wie in die Erlösung treibt. Aber abseits davon ist es das Hauptziel, die Zuhörer die versteckten Botschaften verstehen zu lassen, in denen es darum geht, wie die Menschen Leute mit psychischen Problemen im Mittelalter behandelt haben.

Ist FRAGMENT SOUL ein Einmalprojekt oder gibt es Pläne für weitere Musik?

FRAGMENT SOUL arbeiten bereits an einem zweiten Album! Da hast du’s also 🙂

Arbeitest Du noch an etwas Anderem?

Ich würde gerne ankündigen, dass Anders Jacobsson (Draconian) und ich an einem Nebenprojekt arbeiten, welches auf dem Konzept von Axiom of Choice basiert. Das ist ein wirklich interessantes Projekt, welches gerade erst anläuft. Geduldet Euch also auf die Veröffentlichung.

Die Pandemie hat alle Musiker dazu gezwungen zu Hause zu bleiben. Wie gehst du mit der Situation um? Plant Ihr eine Tour, wenn das alles vorbei ist?

Die Pandemie hat (vor allem) Künstler dazu gezwungen, ihre Projekte zu verschieben oder auf Eis zu legen. Es ist also für uns ebenso anstrengend. Wir gewöhnen uns an die Situation und planen weiter.

Ja, wir planen eine Tour/ eine Reihe an Liveshows, um das Album zu präsentieren.

Von allen Dingen, die gerade nicht möglich sind: was vermisst du am meisten? Hast du irgendwelche neuen Hobbies angefangen?

Tatsächlich vermisse ich die Tage, an denen ich spazieren gehen konnte, ohne eine SMS senden zu müssen…

Nein, ich habe kein neues Hobby angefangen, keine Zeit dafür! Ich arbeite viel an neuer Musik und unterrichte Mathe.

Ich habe also auf deinem Facebookprofil richtig gelesen, dass Du auch ein Mathelehrer bist. Wann und warum hast Du entschieden Lehrer zu werden?

Mathe habe ich schon als Kind geliebt. Zunächst wollte ich nur forschen. Aber wenn der andere Teil von dir Künstler ist, der viel Zeit für Kunst verlangt, habe ich beschlossen nur als Lehrer zu arbeiten, damit ich mich weiterhin Mathe aber auch der Musik widmen kann.

Hast Du schon als Kind davon geträumt Musik zu machen?

Ich mache tatsächlich Musik, seitdem ich 13 Jahre alt bin.

Bevor das Interview zum Ende kommt, würde ich dir gerne noch ein paar kurze Fragen stellen: In welche drei Länder würdest Du am liebsten reisen?

Schweden, USA, Japan

Gibt es TV-Sendungen, die Du heimlich zum Vergnügen schaust?

Im Moment schaue ich gerade eine Serie auf Netflix, die Thieves of Wolfs heißt.

Wenn Du in einer fiktiven Welt wie Narnia leben könnest, welche wäre das?

Wow, Narnia! Was für eine wunderschöne fiktive Welt! Das ist echt eine schwierige Frage. Wahrscheinlich die Welt von Herr der Ringe.

Hi Spiros! Thank you for answering a few questions! Axiom of Choice will be released soon. How excited are you?

First of all, I would like to thank you for contacting me to do this interview!

To be honest, I m really glad that we are finally releasing the album! It was a long journey, which started at 2016 when I wrote the concept for this album. I can’t be grateful enough that my brother Jimmy Louvros is in the band, because he contributed the most in composing the final musical parts.

What inspired you to make this album?

Basically, the previous unreleased work that me and Jimmy were working on for a couple of years. After finishing university (I had a break from composing music), the need to gather my ideas, and later Jimmy’s, came naturally. So we composed an album together.

What draws you to this genre of music?

Since I was a kid I was listening mainly to prog bands. Bands like Opeth, Katatonia, Rush, King Crimson, Pink Floyd and a lot more – mainly bands from 70s. Then I found an interest in the doom-death/goth metal genre. I was listening bands like Daylight Dies, Draconian, Swallow the Sun. The attraction came at once since I love that horror-like atmosphere. So probably you will notice all those genres in the album.

You have invited two people to collaborate on your album. Why these two?

I would like to thank both of them. Heike Langhans and Egan O’Rourke responded with enthusiasm for that work. Since the album is a concept album, I felt the demand of a female vocalist and a male vocalist for the needs of one of the songs.

Asking Egan was straightforward since Daylight Dies is one of my favourite bands, period. Egan has such an amazing talent as a vocalist that his vocals fitted at once.

Now with Heike it’s a different story. Back at 2016 I didn’t know about her to be honest. Then I found a song from Hallatar on which she was a guest and then I realised that she is the female vocalist of Draconian! So when I heard that song, I said to myself „ok this is a kind of vocals that would fit perfectly in the album“.

Axiom of Choice is a concept album dealing with different emotions and situations. Can you talk a bit more about the main characters of this album?

It is a journey through romance, torment, fear and at the end of it all unexpected tranquillity that drives the main characters into despair and deliverance alike. But besides that the main goal is to make people understand the hidden messages about how humanity in the Middle Ages treated people with mental health problems.

Is FRAGMENT SOUL a onetime only project or are there already plans for more music?

Fragment Soul is working for the 2nd album already! So there you go. 🙂

Is there something else you’re working on?

I would like to announce that Anders Jacobsson (Draconian) and I are collaborating on a side project that will be a concept album based on the ongoing scenario of the Axiom of Choice concept. That’s a really interesting project that is just starting out, so please be patient for that release!

The pandemic has forced all musicians to stay home. How do you cope with this situation? Do you have plans to go on tour once this is over?

The pandemic is something that, especially for artists, delayed their projects or forced them to stop any of their creativity. So it’s a big struggle for us too, getting used of this situation and continue our plans.

Yeah, we are planning to do a tour/series of live shows for the album presentation.

From all the things that aren’t really possible at the moment, what do you miss the most? Have you picked up any new hobbies?

Actually I’m missing the days that I could go for a walk without having in mind sending an SMS…

No I didn’t pick up any new hobby, no time for that! Working a lot on new music and also teaching students maths 

So I read it correctly on your Facebook page that you are also a maths teacher. When and why did you decide to become a teacher? 

Maths is something I loved since I was a kid. First, I wanted to focus only on research. But when the other part of you is an artist that demands a lot of time to spend in art, I decided to continue only as a teacher, so that I would not lose touch with maths and at the same time to have time for music.

Did you already dream about making music when you were a kid?

Actually from 13 years old I already started writing music.

Sweden, USA, Japan

Do you have any guilty pleasure TV shows?

At the moment I’m finishing a series on Netflix called Thieves of Wolfs.

If you could live in a fictional world, like Narnia, which one would it be and why?

Wow! Narnia – what a marvellous fictional world! That’s a really hard question 🙂

Probably in the Lord of the Rings world.
